1985. An odd mix of adventurers and mercenaries plunge into Mindanao's steaming jungles, wherein lies Communist rebels, savage natives, and aging Japanese soldiers who protect a legendary treasure.
Jack, like his father, is an adventurer. Roy, his father, has lived a mercenary's life and has the scars to prove it. A bit of a humorous scoundrel himself, Roy is used to dealing with double-crossing villains and is exasperated by his son's usual level of gullibility. Jack is a nice guy, a bit too 'decent' for his own good, and he and Roy continually spar, both physically and verbally, over the other's shortcomings. Jack is trying to prove himself to his father and is subconsciously seeking his father's approval. What they like about each other is the concern and deep trust they share when in a tight spot.
Having lived through a few near misses together, Jack presents to his father his next great adventure - specifically trying to find one of Yamashita's treasures in the wilds of Mindanao.
Roy is highly sceptical, but comes along, not only for the ride, but to protect his son from what he considers a dangerous scam run by a ruthless Filipino banker. Once in the Philippines, father and son team up with Ramon dela Cruz, a highly respected guide and specialist in decoding the signs that were left by the Japanese, and which reveal where the treasures lie.
Much to Jack's interest Ramon also happens to have a strikingly attractive daughter, Marilou, who will accompany them into the jungle. Her main role is to ensure the health of her father, who although a wonderful athlete in his youth, now suffers badly from angina.
Soon after arriving at the edge of the jungle, they have to abandon their vehicles and take to hacking a path through the thick jungle. It is not long, however, before complications arise. A chance meeting with dangerously armed natives causes strong tensions within the group. Their security chief, Jackson, as widely experienced Korean and Vietnam veteran, begins to reveal that the agenda for him and his men has secret facets - those given to him by his corrupt employer, Philip Villa, the banker and organizer of the expedition. The truth is revealed: if the treasure is found the expedition members have to be sacrificed and the treasure stolen.
It isn't long before the crew encounters Communist rebels ready to kidnap them for ransom. It is obvious that the natives have tipped the rebels off. Putting their heads together, and in a wild shootout, Jack, Jackson and his men eliminate the rebels.
Ramon, now well aware that Jackson has a secret and deadly agenda, goes out alone to scout for the treasure. What he finds leads him to three aging Japanese soldiers, refugees from WWII, men sworn to the death to protect Yamashita's treasure.
The stage is set for a decisive, climactic finish. Who will win between those motivated by greed, and those seeking the rewards of true and wondrous adventure?
